In our lifetime, we are going to have many acquaintances. Some of them come and go so quickly that we don’t even realize they were part of our lives, but others will stick around and become our dear friends.
Sometimes, the strangest friendships may crop up, and that includes one that was between Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers. They sang duets together, including Islands in the Stream, a 1983 hit that is still loved today.
Since then, they have had a friendship that was undeniable and they decided they were going to seal the deal. They did so by coming up with a new duet, ‘You Can’t Make Old Friends’. Watching them sing it together is a thing of beauty.
In the official video, they sit on a couch and talk about some of the good times they had together in their long-term friendship. She mentions that it was 30 years since they released the song, Island in the Stream. She admits, “To this day I never get tired of hearing that song, same with the audience, everybody loves that song.”
They then talk about how something special happened and they have a special chemistry between them, which is their friendship. People can sense it, which is what makes things so special.
The couple even go so far as to say how they are soulmates, and Dolly Parton says that every time she sees him, she smiles. Kenny said: “We can not see each other for six months and we walk in a room and it’s like we’re just back together again….we are old friends.”
That is when they start singing together, and the song is beautiful. It isn’t just the music or the fact that it is major celebrities that are singing it, is the fact that they mean every word of it.
