When you go out to eat with family or friends, it’s one of life’s little pleasures that is meant to be enjoyed. Often, you go for your favorite food, which could be Italian, steak, or perhaps even Chinese.
If you happen to be a lover of Chinese food, then you have more than likely heard people joking about how they may use other animals rather than using chicken. Of course, we all realize that those are only rumors but what if it were actually true?
Although most Chinese restaurants are on the up and up, one particular Chinese restaurant in Madrid has been closed down. The reason? The ‘roasted duck’ on the menu was actually made out of Street pigeon.
If you happen to be a fan of Chinese food, then you just may want to steer clear of the Jin Gu restaurant in Madrid. Everybody who regularly went there to get some roasted duck is unlikely going to be thinking twice before they ever order it out again.
It happened during a police investigation and the police shut down the restaurant and began an investigation on the owners. It started with a raid last month and according to footage, bowls of plucked and cooked pigeons were seen in the kitchen.
Police shared the footage and also showed some rather unsavory-looking meat hanging from clotheslines in the restaurant as well. According to media outlets, the undated and unlabeled meat was also stored in freezers that were broken.
If that weren’t bad enough, the police are saying there were cockroaches and rat traps in the kitchen right next to the prep station for the food. The knives and cookware were rusted and no thermometers were there to measure the temperature of the meat in the food storage areas.
But wait, there’s more. The police found sea cucumbers in their investigation, which are not allowed according to marine law.
After all of these discoveries, the owners of the restaurant are being investigated and animal cruelty charges are being considered. They are also considering consumer violation charges as well.
If you happen to look up the restaurant on Google, it is currently rated at a 4.2. There are a lot of comments left about the restaurant, including one left five years ago that said: “The duck I think is a little dry and lots of bones, not that tasty.”
I should say not.
