One of the celebrities that has stuck around in our hearts and minds over the years is Betty White. She was more than just an actress, she was an entertainer and remained popular till her dying day.
Over the years, Betty White paid a lot of attention to her career and she always did things according to her own design. You might even call her a rebel in some ways.
One thing that Betty did that was unusual for her day was to focus on her career and she did not have any children when she was young. It was liberating for her, and it’s something she said she never regretted.
When Betty White was working on her career, there must’ve been a tremendous amount of pressure to have children. Despite that, she felt that there were reasons why it was best if she avoided having kids.
She spoke about this in 2021 during an interview, saying: “I’m so compulsive about stuff, I know if I had ever gotten pregnant, of course, that would have been my whole focus. But I didn’t choose to have children because I’m focused on my career. And I just don’t think as compulsive as I am, that I could manage both.”
Many of the actresses in Betty’s day did also avoid having children when they were young but they went on to have them later in life. Betty decided that it was better if she didn’t settle down and have a family so she could focus on her career.
That doesn’t mean that she didn’t enjoy having a husband, as she loved her husband, Allen Ludden very much. He was the host of the television game show, Password, and they were married in 1963. Betty was then a stepmother to his three children, as their mother had died two years earlier from cancer.
Even though the children were teenagers when they were married, she was very protective of them. Unfortunately, her husband died in 1989 and she never remarried.
She decided to continue working and appeared on shows, including the guest host on Saturday Night Live.
The world will always remember Betty White and all that she offered to us. We miss her humor but appreciate the fact that she left behind such a legacy for us to enjoy.
