There are some people in history who continue to speak to us, even years after they are gone. One of those individuals is Princess Diana, and she has been on the minds of many in recent times as if she were still here with us.
One individual who probably considers Princess Diana more than we would expect is Meghan Markle. As one of the newer members of the royal family, she is often compared to Diana, and now one of Diana’s old friends is weighing in on the subject.
In March 2021, the Duchess of Sussex was compared to the late Princess when she gave an interview with Oprah Winfrey along with her husband, Prince Harry. Many people thought about the interview Princess Diana gave with Martin Bayshore in 1995.
During that interview, the Princess of Wales talked about her mental health struggles and about her divorce from Prince Charles, which is really a taboo subject in the royal family. Meghan also talked about issues she faced now that she is a part of the royal family and how she was treated when she was interviewed in 2021.
Oprah Winfrey and Harry also had a discussion in the documentary special, The Me You Can’t See. They were able to discuss more about mental health and Harry weighed in on the subject.
When Harry spoke about the treatment that Meghan had received, he said: “Within the first eight days of our relationship being made public was when they said, ‘Harry’s girl almost straight outta Compton.’ And that her exotic DNA will be thickening the royal blood.” He then continued: “We would get followed, photographed, chased, harassed.”
Prince Harry also spoke about the comparison between his mother and the racism that they experienced with her Egyptian boyfriend in the late 90s. He compared it with his relationship with Meghan and some of the issues they faced.
Meghan has seemed to draw a lot of criticism from the media and strangers since she began dating Prince Harry in 2016. At one point, it got so bad that the royal palace released a statement on behalf of the Duke, calling the media coverage harassment and abuse and calling out the ‘racial undertones.’
The pair continued to experience problems after they were married in 2018 and eventually, they would leave the royal life and move to the United States in March 2020.
Tensions have grown over the years and although they may have reduced to a certain extent, there is still something going on in the background.
It seems as if everybody is against Meghan, but that isn’t the case. Stewart Pearce, who was friends with Princess Diana before she died feels that Meghan is very similar in her independent spirit.
He said: “There is a vibrational difference, but the point is that the courage, the sensitivity that it took to come forth with those revelations was outstanding and I felt that what Meghan was actually living through was the spirit of revelation, the spirit of transparency that Diana was trying to achieve.”
He also spoke about the tension between King Charles and Prince Harry. He said: “Being privy to these people’s lives, the stories we’ve heard about the boys not getting on or disparagement between Harry and his father, is the stuff of all our lives.
“In Harry’s tone of expression, we do not hear spleen, anger, revenge, reprisal and hear no form of disrespect. What we hear is a young man emotionally excavating and having an emotional autopsy on what he believes the values of the world are.
“I happen to concur with his values. We are getting emotionally intelligent, speaking about the way we feel.”
Pearce also spoke about the similarities between Diana and Meghan, saying that they were both extraordinary women. “Diana was a force of liberation… I feel that as Diana was a voice of liberation, Harry and Meghan are doing something extraordinary about a regime that needs to change.”
